✶ More than 250 frames, drawn by hand. I remember exactly how it felt and sounded back then: krg, krg, krg. A mixture of joy, pain, and ink.
I have kept all those illustrations — plus the sketches, form studies, and failed test runs. Why? I’m not sure... But being able to leaf through and hold that stack of frames now carries a weight — literally and figuratively.
Sometimes I think: sorry body, if only I knew then what I know now. But there is no ‘fast-forward’ in life. Experience brought me to where I am now: a body that guides instead of suffers, and a mind that accepts, though sometimes reluctantly.

✦ Part III. of a rippling triptych: on remember-things, enchantment and disillusionment. On connection, humanity and our shared memory, and the (in)accessibility of what we seek, yet sometimes (just not) manage to find.

I'm partial to seemingly endless musings and philosophising about any given subject. I have a soft spot for analysis. My mind is constantly overflowing with questions: many of which I have no answer to. Our memory is limited, readily available knowledge even more so. And then, inevitably, there comes that call, the lure of that infinite archive of everything: the internet.

For me an online search almost always starts the same way — no surprise there — with a search engine. There are many, but we all know the most (in)famous one, which has by now grown into much more than a search engine. Yes, it starts with a capital G.

In search of the explanation for the shell-murmur sound I ended up, via my favourite search engine (not the one with the capital G), on a Wikipedia page dedicated to the phenomenon. The Dutch page is called, literally and poetically: Ruisen (schelp) — Murmur (shell). Its English counterpart: Seashell resonance.

I found a beautiful image, an explanatory (but to me incomprehensible) formula relating to the volume of the resonance and the size of the shell, and a year: 1835.

“The acoustic explanation of the phenomenon dates back to 1835 or even earlier, but the story that the sea can be heard in the shell is still told, because the illusion is so strong." ^a

That sentence and that year, they stayed with me and began to resonate in my mind. As did this unintentional wiki-poem.

Why I love Wikipedia: the sources. The sentence contained a reference — a small footnote after the year — I followed this source and ended up in a beautiful anthropological article Seashell Sound by Stefan Helmreich in Cabinet Magazine.

This story felt like a refreshing dive into history: poems, theories and images. A rich collection of human endeavours; wonder and creativity. That side of being human makes me feel like a human — I sometimes question it. The need to understand, to learn, to imagine. And… after reading, scrolling and searching I also found what I was looking for. The source, or at least the title of a book and the correct page number.

I know (read: I hope) that I am not the only one who becomes mildly obsessed during the search for very specific information. I wanted to hold the book, leaf through it, discover the right page, read the text and fathom it. Absorb what others before me had absorbed. But that holding had to be let go of very quickly. So I did, although perhaps obsessive at times, I am rarely unrealistic.

If, if, if…

The book still exists, but is not for sale. The knowledge is outdated, supplemented and although valuable as part of history, no longer useful as study material. If I had been a scientist, or a student… Then perhaps I might have been able to obtain the book, borrow it I mean. Borrow it, and then hold it with gloved hands, leaf through it and return it neatly.

In an ideal world all knowledge is always accessible to everyone, right? Fortunately there are organisations that archive this kind of books as cultural or scientific heritage, nowadays also online. I will not describe all the side paths, dead-end searches and disappointing rabbit holes.

The wonderful thing about this story is: I found the book.

On HathiTrust. There was a different pagination, and so it kind of felt like leafing through. But not as rustling and cozy, that old booky smell was missing… Actually, I was just searching with a search engine again. Slightly less romantic, but still.

An image of a page you can almost smell; that old booky scent, everything about it breathes age. Wood-pulp paper discolours, it yellows. This page too, though I would call the colour more beige, or a very light brown. Dark edges and spots, mostly along the sides. The result of hands and fingers that leafed, searched and found. Skin on paper, the passing of time. The page seems to be missing a corner at the lower left, which makes me suspect it was a left-hand page. I cannot tell from the page number, I lost count a long time ago.

Just below the middle of the page the text I was looking for begins, preceded by a number: paragraph 767.

“The concave, undulating, and perfectly polished surface of many sea shells, fits them to catch, to concentrate, and to return the pulses of all sounds that happen to be trembling about them, so as to produce that curious resonance from within, which resembles the distant murmur of the ocean.” ^c

Unfortunately I cannot share the scanned page here; although the information and even the book are free from copyright, the scans are not. And that is why I did my best to describe in words what I found. Who holds the rights to those scans, of that book, which as a layperson you could impossibly get your hands on? Three guesses. Yes, it starts with a capital G.

While digging deep into my own foggy memory, that of my family, among the many objects that once belonged to my grandparents, and in various online archives, I asked myself: how did I end up here again?

Such a question, such a situation, for me more the rule than the exception. An idea readily becomes a deep interest, which then develops into an often brief obsession.

During the writing of this story I found myself on two different quests. At first it felt like calmly strolling, taking two pleasant side paths. Nice, very nice, interesting even, with the chance of beautiful imagery. But along the way the search brought me not only closer to my sources, but also deeper into my own thoughts, towards new insights.

Those new reflections found their way into the original story. I dedicated a few sentences to them, but the quests themselves would have interrupted the narrative too much.

And then I thought: why not make it a triology? I love triptychs, small series. And keeping this to myself… no.
Why would I?

✦ Deel III. van een ruisend drieluik: over herinnerdingen, betovering en ontgoocheling. Over verbinding, menszijn en ons gedeelde geheugen, en de (on)toegankelijkheid van wat we zoeken, maar soms (net niet) kunnen vinden.

Eindeloos kan ik mijmeren en filosoferen over een onderwerp. Ik ben dol op analyseren. In mijn gedachten dobberen voortdurend allerlei vragen voorbij: veel waarop ik geen antwoord heb. Ons geheugen is beperkt, parate kennis zo mogelijk nog beperkter. En dan lonkt als vanzelf dat oneindige archief van alles: het internet.

Een online zoektocht begint voor mij vaak — hoe kan het ook anders — bij een online zoekmachine. Er zijn er velen, maar we kennen allemaal de bekendste, die inmiddels is uitgegroeid tot veel meer dan een zoekmachine. Ja, het begint met de hoofdletter G.

Op zoek naar de verklaring voor het schelp-ruis geluid kwam ik via mijn favoriete zoekmachine (niet die met de hoofdletter G) in eerste instantie terecht op een Wikipedia pagina gewijd aan het fenomeen. De pagina heet letterlijk en poëtisch: Ruisen (schelp).

Ik vond er een prachtige afbeelding, een verklarende (maar voor mij onbegrijpelijke) formule met betrekking tot het volume van het ruisen en het formaat van de schelp én een jaartal: 1835.

“De akoestische verklaring van het verschijnsel dateert al uit 1835 of nog eerder, maar nog steeds wordt het verhaal dat de zee hoorbaar zou zijn in de schelp verteld, omdat de illusie zo sterk is.” ^a

Die zin en dat jaartal, ze bleven hangen en begonnen te ruisen in mijn brein. Zo ook dit onbedoelde wiki-gedichtje.

Waarom ik hou van wikipedia: de bronnen. In de zin stond een bronvermelding, achter het jaartal, ik volgde deze bron en kwam terecht in een prachtig antropologisch artikel Seashell Sound door Stefan Helmreich op Cabinet Magazine.

Dit verhaal voelde als een frisse duik de geschiedenis in: gedichten, verklaringen en afbeeldingen. Een rijke verzameling menselijkheden; verwondering en creativiteit. Die kant van menszijn doet mij voelen dat ik mens ben — ik twijfel er soms aan. Het willen begrijpen, leren, verbeelden.
En… na het lezen, scrollen en zoeken vond ik ook nog eens wat ik zocht. De bron, althans de titel van een boek én het juiste paginanummer.

Ik weet zeker (lees: ik hoop) dat ik niet de enige ben die vanaf zo’n moment lichtelijk geobsedeerd raakt door een zoektocht naar hele specifieke informatie. Ik wilde het boek vasthouden, doorbladeren, de juiste pagina vinden, de tekst lezen en het begrijpen. Tot me nemen wat anderen voor me tot zich hadden genomen. Maar dat vasthouden moest ik al heel gauw loslaten. Dus dat deed ik, hoewel misschien soms obsessief, ben ik zelden onrealistisch.

Als, als, als…

Het boek bestaat nog, maar is niet te koop. De kennis is achterhaald, aangevuld en hoewel waardevol als onderdeel van de geschiedenis, natuurlijk niet meer bruikbaar als lesstof. Als ik een wetenschapper was geweest, of een student… Dan heel misschien had ik het boek kunnen bemachtigen, lenen bedoel ik. Lenen, en dan met handschoentjes aan vasthouden, doorbladeren en netjes terug geven.

In een ideale wereld is alle kennis altijd voor iedereen toegankelijk, toch? Gelukkig zijn er organisaties die dit soort boeken als cultureel of wetenschappelijk erfgoed archiveren, tegenwoordig ook online. Ik zal niet alle zijpaadjes, doodlopende zoekopdrachten en teleurstellende rabbit-holes omschrijven.

Het geweldige aan dit verhaal is: ik vond het boek.

Op HathiTrust. Er was wel sprake van een andere paginering, en dus was het toch een soort van doorbladeren. Maar dan minder ritselend en gezellig, geen boekengeur… Eigenlijk was ik gewoon weer aan het zoeken met een zoekmachine. Iets minder romantisch, maar toch.

Een afbeelding van een bladzijde die je bijna kunt ruiken; boekengeur, alles eraan ademt oud. Houthoudend papier verkleurd, het vergeeld. Zo ook deze pagina, hoewel ik de kleur eerder beige zou noemen, of heel lichtbruin. Donkere randen en vlekjes, vooral aan de zijkanten. Het resultaat van handen en vingers die bladerden, zochten en vonden. Huid op papier, de tijd. De pagina lijkt een hoekje te missen aan de linker onderkant, wat me doet vermoeden dat het een linkerpagina was. Ik kan dat niet opmaken uit het paginanummer, de tel ben ik allang kwijt.

Net onder het midden van de pagina begint de tekst die ik zocht, voorafgaand door een cijfer: paragraaf 767.

De ingescande pagina, die mag ik hier dus helaas niet delen; hoewel de informatie en zelfs het boek vrij zijn van copyright zijn de scans dat niet. En daarom heb ik mijn best gedaan om wat ik vond te omschrijven in woorden. Wie de rechten heeft op die scans, van dat boek, waar je als leek onmogelijk aan kunt komen? Drie keer raden. Ja, het begint met de hoofdletter G.

Mocht je meer hebben met beelden, ben je gewoon heel nieuwsgierig geworden of vind je dat ik met mijn woorden hopeloos te kort schiet?

Diep gravend in mijn eigen haperende geheugen, in dat van mijn familie, tussen de vele spulletjes die ooit van mijn opa en oma waren en in diverse online archieven, vroeg ik me af: hoe ben ik hier ook alweer beland?

Zo’n vraag, zo’n situatie, voor mij eerder regel dan uitzondering. Een idee verandert al snel in een diepe interesse, en die ontpopt zich vervolgens tot een vaak kortstondige obsessie.

Tijdens het schrijven van dit verhaal belandde ik in twee verschillende speurtochten. In eerste instantie voelde het als het rustig inslaan van twee aangename zijpaden. Leuk, heel leuk, interessant zelfs, met kans op mooie beelden. Maar gaandeweg bracht het zoeken me niet alleen dichter bij mijn bronnen, maar ook steeds verder mijn gedachten in, steeds dieper richting nieuwe inzichten.

Die nieuwe reflecties nestelden zich in het oorspronkelijke verhaal. Ik heb er natuurlijk een paar zinnen aan gewijd, maar de zoektochten zelf zouden de verhaallijn te veel onderbreken.

En toen dacht ik: waarom zou ik dit niet apart vertellen? Ik hou van drieluiken, van kleine reeksen. En dit voor mezelf houden… nee.

With my eyes closed, I can picture it, almost feel it, cold against my ear: the sealophone. The shell of all shells. Where might it be now?

This search began, as it often does when I try to trace an object from my childhood, at my parents' house. My mother couldn't remember the shell — which surprised me. She did find another one though. A similar specimen, that also used to belong to my grandparents. Grandma might have brought it back from Australia? I studied the shell carefully, weighed it in my hand, pressed it gently against my ear. I wanted so much for it to be the shell, but I knew with absolute certainty: this is not it.

This almost-but-not-quite-specimen was coloured the wrong way around and felt like the negative of the shell. That one was brown with pale spots and fitted perfectly into the ‘70s interior of my grandparents' home: the setting of the original sea-murmur-shell-memory. The almost-but-not-quite-shell had a pale base covered in a great many brown spots.

Now I could dedicate a number of passages to the conversation my mother and I had. And to the fact that my mother doubted my findings — because she did. Was I really that convinced it wasn't the shell? But my mother and I are both very transparent about our memory; we don't trust it. So her doubts were my doubts.

Had the shell actually been that '70s? Does such a shell even exist?

I brought the almost-but-not-quite-shell home with me. There I found it a nice place, prominently in view. It was a beautiful object nonetheless. I studied its spots and looked into its origins: what creature had once dwelled inside?

The better I got acquainted with the object, the more convinced I became of my first reaction: this is not it. But I also felt: it might have been.

Meanwhile I kept writing my story and began to realise that my memory is actually our shared experience. In someone else’s memory the almost-but-not-quite-shell is undoubtedly the main character. And if not this particular specimen, then certainly a relative, a look-alike, an ancestor.

After an elaborate photo session and series of sketches — the almost-but-not-quite-shell turned out to be a gifted model — the object had managed to claim a prominent place in my memory too. Filed in the same drawer as the memory of the shell, but under a separate tab: the search for.

The shell itself remained untraceable. By then I had stopped the search. My passing doubts had completely faded, and I knew: the shell itself might be gone, but my wonderful reminiscence is not. In my memory it still exists.

But as it goes with memories: while you search for them desperately, the answer remains just out of reach. When you step away from it, your memory quietly keeps on searching. Until, often at an unexpected moment, the answer pops up, seemingly out of nowhere.

And that’s exactly what happened with the shell. We found it. In the perfect place: my nephew's room. There it was, laying on a shelf full of treasures (a kind of cabinet of curiosities) surrounded by shark teeth, ammonites, beautiful stones and other collectibles. And it was just as I remembered. What a relief.

My sister confirmed my findings. My brother responded delighted: 'Yes! We used to hold it against our ear.' I had clearly not started in the right place. My starting point was at the top of the family tree, but the search ended with the youngest generation. That the shell played a leading role in my sister's and brother's memory too, I could have known. We do share DNA, our childhood and grandparents. My mother remembers a great deal, but not everything. Our grandparents were her father and mother; the same people, but in a different role.

I borrowed it for a while, the shell. We have one more photo and sketch session planned. After that, it’ll move back to its new home.

At times we can rely on our memory, yet at other occasions we cannot at all. It’s impossible to determine whether it’s a case of ‘can’ or ‘cannot’ in the moment. And so my conclusion is: I never trust my memory. Until it turns out to be trustworthy for once.

✦ Deel II. van een ruisend drieluik: over herinnerdingen, betovering en ontgoocheling. Over verbinding, menszijn en ons gedeelde geheugen, en de (on)toegankelijkheid van wat we zoeken, maar soms (net niet) kunnen vinden.

Met mijn ogen dicht zie ik hem voor me, kan ik hem bijna voelen, koud tegen mijn oor: de zeelofoon. De schelp der schelpen. Waar zou die nu zijn?

Deze speurtocht begon, zoals wel vaker wanneer ik een voorwerp uit mijn jeugd probeer te traceren, in het huis van mijn ouders. Mijn moeder kon zich de schelp niet herinneren — wat me verbaasde. Wel vond ze een andere. Een soortgelijk exemplaar, ook van opa en oma geweest. Oma zou hem meegenomen kunnen hebben uit Australië? Ik bestudeerde de schelp aandachtig, woog hem in mijn hand, drukte hem zacht tegen mijn oor. Ik wilde zo graag dat het de schelp was, maar ik wist heel zeker: dit is hem niet.

Dit bijna-maar-net-niet-exemplaar was verkeerd om gekleurd en voelde als het negatief van de schelp. Die was bruin met lichte vlekken en paste perfect in het jaren 70-interieur van mijn opa en oma: het toneel van de originele zee-ruis-schelp-herinnering. De bijna-maar-net-niet-schelp had een lichte basis met daarop een heleboel bruine vlekken.

Nu zou ik een aantal passages kunnen wijden aan het gesprek dat mijn moeder en ik toen voerden. En aan het feit dat mijn moeder mijn bevindingen betwijfelde — want dat deed ze. Wist ik écht heel zeker dat het niet de schelp was? Maar mijn moeder en ik zijn allebei heel transparant over ons geheugen; we vertrouwen het niet. Dus haar twijfels waren mijn twijfels.

Was de schelp echt zo jaren 70 geweest, bestaat zo’n schelp eigenlijk überhaupt wel?

Ik nam de bijna-maar-net-niet-schelp mee naar huis. Daar kreeg hij een mooi plekje, prominent in het zicht. Het was hoe dan ook een fijn object. Ik verdiepte me in de vlekken en onderzocht de oorsprong: welk dier had erin geleefd?

Hoe beter ik het ding leerde kennen, hoe overtuigder ik werd van mijn eerste reactie: dit is hem niet. Maar ik voelde ook: het had hem wél kunnen zijn.

Ondertussen schreef ik door aan mijn verhaal en begon me te realiseren dat mijn herinnering eigenlijk onze gezamenlijke ervaring is. De bijna-maar-net-niet-schelp speelt ongetwijfeld de ruisende hoofdrol in een herinnering van iemand anders. En als het niet gaat om dit exemplaar, dan zeker om een soortgenoot, een dubbelganger, een voorouder.

Na een uitgebreide fotosessie en schetsserie — de bijna-maar-net-niet-schelp bleek een getalenteerd model — had het voorwerp ook een prominente plek veroverd in mijn geheugen. Opgeslagen in hetzelfde laatje als de herinnering aan de schelp, maar dan onder een apart tabje: de zoektocht naar.

De schelp zelf bleef onvindbaar. Ik was inmiddels gestopt met zoeken. Mijn tijdelijke twijfels waren verdwenen, en ik accepteerde: de schelp zelf is weg, maar mijn prachtige herinnering niet. In mijn geheugen bestaat hij nog.

Maar zoals dat gaat met herinneringen: zolang je er krampachtig naar zoekt, blijft het antwoord buiten bereik. Pas als je het laat rusten, gaat je geheugen stilletjes op zoek, tot het ineens, vaak op een onverwacht moment, met het antwoord op de proppen komt.

Zo ging het ook met de schelp. We vonden hem terug. Op een heel passende plek: in de kamer van mijn neefje. Daar lag hij op een plank vol schatten (een soort rariteitenkabinet) omringd door haaientanden, ammonieten, mooie stenen en andere verzameldingen. En hij was exact zoals in mijn herinnering. Gelukkig.

Mijn zus bevestigde mijn bevindingen. Mijn broer reageerde enthousiast: ‘Ja! Die hielden we tegen ons oor.’ Ik was duidelijk niet op de juiste plek begonnen. Mijn startpunt was bovenin de stamboom, maar de zoektocht eindigde bij de aller jongste generatie. Dat de schelp in het geheugen van mijn zus en broer ook een hoofdrol speelde, had ik kunnen weten. We delen DNA, een jeugd én een opa en oma. Mijn moeder herinnert zich een heleboel, maar niet alles. Onze opa en oma waren haar vader en moeder; dezelfde mensen, maar een andere rol.

Ik heb hem even geleend, de schelp. Er staan nog een fotosessie en schetsserie in de planning. Daarna gaat hij terug naar zijn nieuwe thuis.

Soms kunnen we het geheugen wel vertrouwen en soms helemaal niet. In het moment zelf kunnen we niet bepalen of het gaat om ‘wel’ of ‘niet’. En dus is mijn conclusie: ik vertrouw het eigenlijk nooit. Tot het een keer wél te vertrouwen is.

✦ Part I. of a rippling triptych: on remember-things, enchantment and disillusionment. On connection, humanity and our shared memory, and the (in)accessibility of what we seek, yet sometimes (just not) manage to find.

I am standing in the living room at my grandparents’ house. To my right is the window, looking out onto the garden: birds, the rain gauge, the shed, and in the doorway, the swing. In front of me stands the aquarium: a magical, luminous glass tank, filled with water plants and brightly coloured fish, gravel lining the bottom. I am still small, and the tank seems enormous. It feels like yet another window, a glimpse, an entrance almost, into the world of fish. A liquid portal.

In my small hand I hold a large, cold, brown shell with pale spots. I press it gently against my ear and hear the murmur. ‘The sound of the sea,’ my grandfather says.
I don’t remember whether I truly believed it, that the murmur really was the sound of the sea. What I do remember very clearly, is the connection I felt: between the shell, the sound in my ear, and the sea. And the aquarium — though filled with fresh water — belonged to that same magical world.

This memory takes place in the ‘80s. I was familiar with the concept of calling someone; my first telephone experience was with a rotary dial. We played with walkie-talkies. Once, we crafted our own makeshift phone connection: two tin cans with a string stretched between them.

And the shell — not just this one, but all large shells — carried messages from the sea. Incomprehensible, in another language. A sealophone, why not? At that time, it just rang true.

Magic, born from the inexplicable, is often undone by the gathering of more knowledge. I sometimes wish myself back to moments when I, as a child, did not yet understand something and simply accepted that. Or tried to explain it, patching together my limited understanding with my own imagination. Without questioning: Does this even make sense?

My parents’ standard response to questions about topics that were too complicated or ‘too grown-up’ was: ‘I’ll explain it to you another time.’ It made me furious: what use was that to me now? If only I had written all those questions down, by now I can’t remember any of them. And chances are I’ve found the answers to most of them myself in the meantime. And somehow, as frustrating as it was to my younger self, my parents were right. Some things are best discovered, figured out, and experienced on your own.

It is often adults who reason away old ideas, born in our childhood dream factory, with logic, facts, knowledge, and science. And sometimes, in more painful cases, we become the adult who says (even to ourselves): ‘You really can’t believe this any longer. You shouldn’t. It’s not right.’

The acoustic explanation for that rushing, whispering sound inside a shell has been around for a long time. And yet… For centuries, perhaps even since the beginning of humanity (and shellfish), people have been passing down the same myth.

Shell, sea creature, sea, ear, the rushing sound of the surf: in my mind, they were already linked. My grandfather’s words, in that setting, worked like a spell: they drew all the individual elements even closer together. Like a sweet-salty collage, they formed an auditory illusion. And I didn’t need to be convinced. It simply felt right.

Science and knowledge broke the spell and the illusion, but not the deep interconnectedness of the individual elements. And the realization that my memory is really part of our shared experience adds a new layer of meaningful connection. A shared, almost universal experience. A kind of semi-collective memory.

The search for an explanation — from wonder to misconception — is beautifully documented. With the advent of carefully digitized archives, it’s possible to travel centuries back online. A vast array of human creations: scientific, narrative, poetic, and visual. All about the same phenomenon. It makes me feel even more deeply connected to that aspect of being human: the constant desire to understand everything, even when the knowledge isn’t (quite) there yet.

For me, the act of holding a large shell to my ear never became just a simple gesture. It’s a memory catalyst, evoking a beautiful recollection: of my grandparents, their house, my childhood, warmth, and belonging. Maybe not a spell, but still an almost magical act. It turns the shell into a kind of tiny time machine.

In all honesty: I still hold every large shell I come across to my ear for a brief moment.

✦ Deel I. van een ruisend drieluik: over herinnerdingen, betovering en ontgoocheling. Over verbinding, menszijn en ons gedeelde geheugen, en de (on)toegankelijkheid van wat we zoeken, maar soms (net niet) kunnen vinden.

Ik sta in de huiskamer bij mijn opa en oma. Rechts van mij het raam, uitkijkend op de tuin: met vogels, de regenmeter, de schuur en in de deuropening de schommel. Voor me staat het aquarium: een magische, stralende, glazen bak, gevuld met waterplanten en felgekleurde vissen, grind op de bodem. Ik ben nog klein, en die bak lijkt gigantisch. Het voelt als nóg een raam, een inkijkje, een ingang bijna, naar de vissenwereld. Een vloeibaar venster.

In mijn kleine hand houd ik een grote, koude, bruine schelp met lichte vlekken. Ik druk hem zacht tegen mijn oorschelp en hoor het ruisen.
‘Het ruisen van de zee,’ zegt mijn opa.
Ik weet niet meer of ik dat toen echt geloofde, dat het ruisen werkelijk van de zee kwam. Wat ik me wél heel helder herinner, is de connectie die ik voelde: tussen de schelp, het geluid in mijn oor en de zee. En het aquarium — hoewel gevuld met zoet water — hoorde bij diezelfde magische wereld.

Deze herinnering speelt zich af in de jaren ’80. Ik was bekend met het concept van iemand bellen, mijn eerste telefoonervaring was er een met een draaischijf. We speelden met walkie-talkies. We knutselden een keer zelf een gammele telefoonverbinding: twee blikjes met daartussen gespannen een touw.

En de schelp — niet alleen deze, maar alle grote schelpen — daarin hoorde je boodschappen van de zee. Onverstaanbaar, in een andere taal. Een zeelofoon, waarom ook niet? Het voelde op dat moment niet meer dan logisch.

Magie, ontstaan vanuit onverklaarbaarheid, wordt vaak verbroken door het vergaren van meer kennis. Ik wens mezelf weleens terug naar momenten waarop ik, als kind, iets nog niet begreep en dat dan volledig accepteerde. Of het probeerde te verklaren, de schamele hoeveelheid kennis hier en daar aanvullend met mijn eigen fantasie. Zonder twijfel: Klopt dit wel?

Het standaardantwoord van mijn ouders op vragen over te gecompliceerde of ‘te volwassen’ onderwerpen was vroeger: ‘Dat vertel ik je later wel een keer.’
Dat maakte me razend: wat had ik daar nu aan? Had ik al die vragen maar opgeschreven, want inmiddels ben ik ze stuk voor stuk vergeten. En de kans is groot dat ik op al die vragen de antwoorden inmiddels zelf heb gevonden. En ergens, hoe frustrerend dat ook was voor mijn kinderbrein van toen, hadden mijn ouders gewoon gelijk. Sommige dingen kun je het beste zelf ontdekken, uitvinden en ervaren.

Het zijn vaak volwassenen die oude ideeën, ontstaan in onze kinderlijke droomfabriek, wegredeneren met logica, feiten, kennis en wetenschap. En soms, in heel pijnlijke gevallen, dan veranderen wijzelf in de volwassene die zegt (óók tegen zichzelf): ‘Dit kun je echt niet langer geloven. Dat mag niet, dat hoort niet.’

De akoestische verklaring voor dat ruisende, suizende schelpgeluid bestaat al een hele tijd. En toch… Al eeuwenlang, misschien zelfs wel sinds het ontstaan van de mensheid (en schelpdieren), vertellen mensen elkaar dezelfde mythe.

Schelp, zeedier, zee, oorschelp, het ruisende geluid van de branding: die waren in mijn brein al aan elkaar verbonden. De woorden van mijn opa, in die setting, werkten als een toverspreuk: ze brachten alle losse elementen nog dichter bij elkaar. Als een zoet-zoute collage vormden ze samen een auditieve illusie. En ik hoefde niet overtuigd te worden. Het klopte.

Wetenschap en kennis verbraken de toverspreuk en de illusie, maar niet de diepgaande connectie tussen de losse elementen. En het besef dat mijn herinnering deel uitmaakt van onze gezamenlijke ervaring, voegt een nieuwe laag van waardevolle verbinding toe. Een gedeelde, bijna universele ervaring. Een soort semi-collectief geheugen.

De zoektocht naar een verklaring — van verwondering tot vergissing — is prachtig vastgelegd. Door de komst van zorgvuldig gedigitaliseerde archieven is het mogelijk om online eeuwen terug te reizen. Een scala aan menselijke creaties: wetenschappelijk, verhalend, poëtisch én beeldend. Allemaal over hetzelfde fenomeen. Het maakt dat ik me nog dieper verbonden voel met dat aspect van mens-zijn: altijd alles willen begrijpen, ook als de kennis er nog (net) niet is.

Voor mij is het gebaar van een grote schelp tegen mijn oor houden nooit zomaar een handeling geworden. Het is een geheugen katalysator, die een prachtige herinnering oproept: aan mijn opa en oma, het huis, mijn kindertijd, warmte en gezelligheid. Geen toverspreuk misschien, maar wél een bijna magisch gebaar. Het maakt de schelp een soort kleine tijdreismachine.

Ik zou iedereen wel willen vragen naar die eerste zee-ruis-schelp-ervaring…

In alle eerlijkheid: ik hou iedere grote schelp die ik in mijn handen krijg nog altijd eventjes gauw tegen mijn oor.

My studio is, at the moment, mostly a place where I am missing.
Where my hands do not make, and projects patiently wait to be turned into stories not yet told. If only I had that same patience.

A lovely scent lingers in the air: a mix of wood, metal, tea, and a trace of clean. The latter comes from an ultrasonic bath filled with soapy water. It is a small space, filled to the brim with materials, tools, and possibilities. During periods when I cannot make at all, I still find myself climbing the stairs to my studio, just to be there. To look around, to touch things, to take photographs. My hands are maker’s hands; they miss the feeling of material, texture, weight, and the act of shaping.

Not being able to make, as a maker-gatherer, creates friction. It makes my studio feel almost like a physical representation of my mind. An archive full of ideas and unfinished beginnings, a collection of hope edged with sadness.

Over the past few years, I’ve learned what pacing means. It has given me insights I could never have discovered otherwise. What that looks like now: I work for one hour at a time in my studio. Rest before it, rest after it.

My latest finished-at-last piece unfolded over 10 hours, during 11 days, spanning 4 months. A process full of ups and downs.

In one of those studio moments, my attention was drawn to a strange, long, spiraling shell. I picked it up, letting its weight settle in my hand. No doubts.
I pressed a tiny doll hand into the opening and added a sprig of precious coral. The collection lay ready on my clean, empty workbench: waiting for the next time.

Two years ago, I moved through the quiet space mostly with sadness. Now, I also feel trust. I am going to make this. I know I can. This new reality sometimes feels almost natural. Almost.

On the day I thought I would finish the work, I felt calm.
The end of a journey: not a race, but a pilgrimage.

In the months leading up to this moment, I had — naturally — wandered down countless mental side paths during the times I wasn’t making. Making or not, time never stands still, and neither does my mind. Gratitude quickly turns into fuel for fantasies of more, more, more…

How do I, as a human and a maker, accept that one moment I am able, and the next I am not?

What if I…

✧ submit the work to an open call
✧ manage to produce an entire series again
✧ start making in my studio for one hour, three days a week
✧ restock and reopen my webshop

On that planned finished-at-last day, I turned the shell gently in its silver spiral. It fit perfectly. I had shaped it to size. And yet, I must have used just a little too much force.

CRACK.
The shell broke.
And I felt nothing.

I was startled by the crack, but no emotion followed. And that nothingness felt strange. I know myself. So I went home. Hours later, during rest, a reaction did come: sadness, anger, frustration, wanting to just quit. In my hands lived the echo of that shell’s crack and a deep longing for more breaking. In a rare moment of mental clarity, I hadn’t brought the shell home. Good. It lay there, still broken, on my workbench. For the next time. And that next time came. Many, many times later than I had imagined.

I decided not to force a solution for the shell’s break, and to sleep on all the possibilities — including the option of smashing the whole piece.

That stretch of sleep lasted six weeks. Weeks during which I could sometimes do nothing at all. After that, my days filled up with other things. I was absent from my studio, unable to be there even for a brief moment. And slowly, I began to love the piece again.

I finished it at last, in two half-hour sessions, when I was able.
And yes, that felt good. The moment when all those separate hours added up to more than the sum of their parts.

But that feeling of joy is not just in finishing.
It’s in that one hour, every time. In the act of making itself.

In my hands that know.
In time that passes on its own.
In the feeling of coming home.

Then comes the longing.
More of this.
And also the dissatisfaction:
why not longer?

Until it is possible again.
One hour in the now.
At home in my studio.

Back in my second year at art academy, my mentor taught me:
’Better one focused hour than a diluted week.’
Then, it was about focus: the balance between rest and work, the way we divided our time. We were juggling countless projects, and my health was already faltering. Years later, that advice has only become more relevant.

I thought acceptance would feel calmer, but it’s no place of rest.
On the one hand, I constantly want to be able to do more. On the other, I keep learning to accept what is (im)possible. Every time I grow used to the latest version of my reality, I outgrow it. A new snakeskin to shed: uncomfortable. My situation keeps constantly changing, and even improvement can create friction at times. Because with that improvement, there is also more room for grief.

I’ve learned how to pace.
Now I’m learning to live with not knowing.

✦ Pacing is a way of living consciously within the boundaries of limited energy. It involves balancing exertion and rest to prevent the worsening of symptoms such as PEM (post-exertional malaise). Pacing can be applied to all types of activity: physical, cognitive, emotional, and sensory. It is not a cure, but a strategy to carefully distribute energy and improve quality of life.

Mijn atelier is op dit moment vooral een plek waar ik mis.
Waar mijn handen niet maken en projecten geduldig wachten tot ze veranderd worden in nog niet vertelde verhalen. Had ik maar hetzelfde geduld.

Er hangt een heerlijke geur: een mix van van hout, metaal, thee en schoon. Dat laatste komt van een trilbadje met zeepsop. Het is een kleine ruimte volgepropt met materiaal, gereedschap en mogelijkheden. In periodes dat ik helemaal niet kan maken, beklim ik soms toch de trappen naar mijn atelier, gewoon om er even te zijn. Om rond te kijken, dingen aan te raken, foto’s te maken. Mijn handen zijn makershanden; die missen het gevoel van materiaal, textuur, gewicht en bewerken.

Niet kunnen maken als maker-verzamelaar, dat schuurt. Mijn atelier voelt daardoor bijna als een fysieke representatie van mijn brein. Een archief vol ideeën en onafgemaakte beginsels, een verzameling hoop met een randje verdriet.

De afgelopen jaren heb ik geleerd wat het betekent om te pacen. Het brengt me inzichten die ik zonder dit proces nooit had ontdekt. Wat ik nu kan: een uurtje achter elkaar werken in mijn atelier. Rust ervoor en rust erna.

Mijn laatste af-af werk kwam tot stand in 10 uur, verdeeld over 11 dagen, verspreid over 4 maanden. Een proces vol ups en downs.

Tijdens een even-in-atelier moment werd mijn aandacht getrokken door een gekke, lange, spiralende schelp. Ik pakte het ding, woog het in mijn hand. Geen twijfels. Ik duwde een poppenhandje in de opening en legde er een takje bloedkoraal bij. De verzameling lag klaar op mijn schone, lege werkbank: voor de volgende keer.

Waar ik twee jaar geleden nog met vooral verdriet bewoog door de stille ruimte, voelde ik nu óók vertrouwen. Ik ga dit maken. Ik wéét dat ik het kan. Deze nieuwe realiteit voelt soms bijna natuurlijk. Bijna dan.

Op de dag dat ik dacht dat ik het werk zou afmaken, voelde ik rust.
Het einde van een reis: geen race, maar een pelgrimstocht.

In de maanden onderweg naar dit moment had ik — uiteraard — allerlei brein-zijpaadjes bewandeld, tijdens de periodes van niet maken. Want maken of niet, de tijd staat nooit stil en mijn brein evenmin. Dankbaarheid verandert al snel in brandstof voor fantasieën over meer, meer, meer…

Want hoe accepteer ik, als mens en maker, dat iets het ene moment wél lukt en het volgende niet?

Wat als ik…

✧ het werk kan insturen voor een open call
✧ weer een hele serie weet te produceren
✧ straks wekelijks drie dagen een uurtje werk maak in mijn atelier
✧ dan mijn webshop vul en weer open

Op die dag, de geplande af-af-dag, draaide ik heel voorzichtig de schelp in zijn zilveren spiraal. Het paste perfect. Ik had het op maat gemaakt. En toch zette ik kennelijk net iets te veel kracht.

KRAK.
De schelp brak.
En ik voelde niks.

Ik schrok even van de krak, maar er volgde geen emotie. En dat niets voelen, dat voelde raar. Ik ken mezelf. Dus ging ik naar huis. Pas uren later, tijdens het rusten, kwam er toch een reactie: verdriet, boosheid, frustratie, het op willen geven. In mijn handen leefde de echo van die schelpkrak en een diep verlangen naar nog meer breken. In een vlaag van verstandigheid had ik de schelp niet meegenomen naar huis. Gelukkig. Het geheel lag nog (kapot) op mijn werkbank. Voor de volgende keer. En die kwam. Vele malen later dan ik had bedacht.

Ik besloot een oplossing voor de schelpbreuk niet te forceren en een nachtje te slapen over alle mogelijkheden — inclusief het hele stuk platstampen.

Maar dat nachtje duurde zes weken. Weken waarin ik soms helemaal niets kon. Daarna hield ik me bezig met andere dingen. Ik ontbrak in mijn atelier. Zelfs een kort moment daar zijn lukte niet. En langzaam begon ik weer van het stuk te houden.

Ik maakte het af‑af, in twee keer een half uur, zodra het weer ging.
En ja, dat voelde goed. Het moment dat alle losse uren samen optelden tot meer dan de som der delen.

Maar dat geluksgevoel zit niet alleen in het afmaken.
Het zit in steeds dat ene uur. In het maken zelf.

In mijn handen die weten.
In tijd die vanzelf voorbijgaat.
In het gevoel van thuiskomen.

Daarna begint het verlangen.
Meer van dit.
En ook de ontevredenheid:
waarom niet langer?

Tot het weer kan.
Een uur in het nu.
Thuis in atelier.

Tijdens het tweede jaar van mijn kunstacademietijd leerde ik van mijn mentor:
‘Beter één geconcentreerd uur, dan een waterige week.’
Dat had toen betrekking op focus: balans tussen rust en inspanning, tijdsverdeling. We jongleerden met talloze projecten, en mijn gezondheid haperde toen ook al. Jaren later blijkt dat advies alleen maar relevanter.

Ik dacht dat acceptatie rustiger zou voelen, maar het is geen rustpunt.
Aan de ene kant wil ik voortdurend nog meer kunnen. Aan de andere kant leer ik telkens opnieuw accepteren wat (on)mogelijk is. Iedere keer dat ik gewend ben aan de laatste update van mijn realiteit ontgroei ik hem. Een nieuw slangenvel om af te stropen: ongemakkelijk. Mijn situatie verandert continu en zelfs verbetering schuurt soms. Want door die verbetering ontstaat er ook meer ruimte voor rouw.

Ik heb geleerd te pacen.
Nu leer ik leven met het niet weten.

Het is geen genezing, maar een strategie om energie zorgvuldig te verdelen en kwaliteit van leven te verbeteren.

Recently a friend gave me the greatest present I never knew I wanted: a digital microscope that you can attach to your smartphone. Right away we started exploring our surroundings and stumbled upon a hungry spider catching and wrapping up an unlucky fly. Skillful, cruel, and fascinating, all at the same time. Next we found aphids hiding within the structure of leaves from a herb garden. Yummy!

There are tiny universes everywhere. Hidden beyond what’s visible with the naked eye. With the right lens you can turn everything into an exciting landscape. By zooming in, my skin becomes a scary moonscape in which I wouldn’t want to get lost. Moss, however, looks like a fuzzy and cozy bed I could snooze on untroubled.

I find the effect that both zooming in and zooming out have on the perception of what I consider to be reality, liberating. The mind has the capability to take everything imaginable and shrink it or expand it in scale, without actually having to undergo a physical transformation. I do have to remind myself to activate this sense of freedom. I tend to get stuck in human-size, not being able to look beyond scale 1:1.

Zooming in on the tiniest of creatures and landscapes, discovering new details, beautiful structures and crazy colour shades, helps me with unlocking this powerful skill. Zooming out has the same kind of effect on my brain. I might not be able to actually make issues smaller on command, but I do have the choice to look at them from a distance. Compared to the magnitude of the universe everything seems small, something I find comforting at times.

Being the master of my own perception is a craft I will have to work on for the rest of my life. The key to the concept is simple though. Don’t lose yourself in the finite, but don’t lose yourself in the infinite either.

✶ I sometimes say: ‘My problems are like a grain of sand in the shoe of the universe.’ Not to trivialize them, but to create a moment of distance. That sentence works like a pause button; it helps me place everything into perspective. Even now. Or perhaps especially now. Because while I can usually put things into perspective, it is not (yet) my default mode. I am a human being, after all.

Een tijdje terug kreeg ik van een vriend het leukste cadeau waarvan ik niet eens wist dat ik het wilde hebben: een digitale microscoop die je aan je smartphone kunt bevestigen. We begonnen meteen onze omgeving te verkennen en stuitten op een hongerige spin die een ongelukkige vlieg ving en vervolgens inpakte. Behendig, wreed én fascinerend. Daarna ontdekten we bladluizen die zich, verscholen in de structuur van bladeren uit de kruidentuin, verborgen hielden. Héérlijk!

We worden omringd door een eindeloze hoeveelheid kleine universumpjes, onzichtbaar voor het blote oog. Met de juiste lens kun je echter alles transformeren in een spannend landschap. Door in te zoomen verandert mijn huid in een afstotelijk maanlandschap waarin ik niet zou durven verdwalen. Mos daarentegen: een donzig en knus bedje waarop ik zorgeloos zou willen wegdromen.

Het effect dat zowel inzoomen als uitzoomen heeft op mijn perceptie van de werkelijkheid ervaar ik als bevrijdend. Ons brein lijkt in staat alles wat denkbaar is te verkleinen of juist uit te vergroten, zonder dat daar een echte, fysieke transformatie voor nodig is. Ik moet mezelf er wel aan blijven herinneren dat ik dit gevoel van vrijheid kán activeren. Soms heb ik de neiging vast te blijven zitten op de menselijke maat, niet in staat om verder te kijken dan schaal 1:1.

Inzoomen op de allerkleinste wezentjes en landschappen, het ontdekken van nieuwe details, prachtige structuren en waanzinnige kleuren; het helpt me bij het ontgrendelen van deze waardevolle behendigheid. Uitzoomen heeft eenzelfde effect. Ik kan problemen misschien niet letterlijk kleiner maken op commando, maar ik heb wél de keuze om ze van een afstandje te bekijken. Vergeleken met de uitgestrektheid van het universum lijkt alles klein. Daar vind ik vaak troost.

Meester zijn over mijn eigen waarneming, dat is een kunst op zich. Een vaardigheid die ik de rest van mijn leven zal moeten blijven aanscherpen. Hoewel het concept in de kern eigenlijk heel simpel is: verlies jezelf niet in het eindige, maar verlies jezelf ook niet in het oneindige.

On a Thursday morning, I cycle to one of my favorite thrift stores, a little nervous. Every shop is a world of sensory overload, thrift stores even more so.

The combination of that classic thrift store smell — musty but somehow comforting — and an unpredictable assortment; often only one of each item, neatly shelved yet scattered. Less overview, more impressions. This particular thrift store is always busy, too. Its opening hours are limited — sensible and smart, since it runs on volunteers — and there’s always music playing.

A world of sensory overload, but also the perfect setting for that delightful thrill of the hunt. The hunter-gatherer in me awakens while thrifting, and I always find something. Even when I'm not really looking for anything.

It’s not the first time I’ve tried a thrift store trip; the previous visits were fun in the moment, but came with an aftermath. The last time even triggered quite severe PEM. So I’m cautious, but now slightly further along in my recovery and this time well prepared. Armed with earplugs, a plan of action, a strict eye on the clock, and a shopping list.

With a shopping list in hand at the thrift store?
Yes, really. Because I'm on a mission, my prey of the day: DVDs.

Like a well-trained horse with blinders on, I deliberately ignore the books, paintings, photo frames, and kitchenware. I turn left twice, then right, and walk determinedly toward my target: the media section, right in the middle of the store. Crates full of LPs and CDs — ignored too — stand next to shelves of DVDs. Organized by genre; this thrift store is one of my favorites for a reason. I dive in, greedy.

As I browse past the shelves, scanning the titles with my eyes, I’m suddenly struck by an unexpected feeling. I’m familiar with thrift-bliss: discovering treasures among the discarded and overstuffed belongings of others. But this is different; it’s pure nostalgia.

For a moment, I drift back in time: it’s the weekend, we’ve been given some money by our parents, and we’re allowed to rent a movie from the local video store. How did we make our choices back then? No idea, maybe we already had an idea of what we wanted. I only remember the feeling. Walking into that place, surrounded by an abundance of options. Handing the empty cover to the counter, where they slipped the tape inside. And then a cozy evening on the couch with family or friends, snacks in hand, staying up late.

‘Remember?’ I ask my brother and sister. And they remember.
The video store feeling isn’t just mine; it’s a shared memory of a generation. An almost-lost weekend ritual: wandering, choosing, waiting. In that form, it barely exists anymore — replaced by streaming.

I tell a friend — also a thrift-shop hunter-gatherer — about my video store experience. She reminds me of that tune the intro of the intro during the copyright warning, just before the movie started. Even more nostalgia.

My wish, maybe to find a few fun DVDs, for cheap, is completely fulfilled. The nostalgic flashbacks come free of charge. Gratefully, I cycle home with a few DVD box sets in my basket.

And yes, watching a DVD feels completely different from streaming: opening the DVD case, the sound of the player swallowing the disc, zoom, zoom, zoom…

And so I spend a few weeks enjoying Poirot, Miss Marple, and Pride and Prejudice, one episode a day. I stick to what I know, savoring it, but always in moderation. Binge-watching a whole series at once has long been out of reach. It wasn’t a conscious decision to cut back on streaming; I simply couldn’t handle media anymore. I had no other choice.

One of the things often said to people recovering from a long-term illness is: ‘You want to get your old life back eventually.’
But is that really the case?

I’ve lost a lot over the past few years, but I know that much of it no longer serves me. Hastiness, for example, and doubts. A certain level of assuming.

There’s also a lot I miss. It feels like mourning, like sorrow and sometimes even nostalgia. But longing for an earlier version of myself doesn’t help me. Healthy or not: we’re all living forward. Every moment we leave a previous version behind.

That’s why I try to see what I’ve lost as letting go. A crash course in acceptance and patience. Looking at things from a new perspective. And sometimes that brings very clear insights and questions:

Do I really want to be online so much, consume so much media, pay for so many subscriptions?

And then suddenly, there’s room to reclaim old love. A renewed version of past delight, here and now. Like finding DVDs at the thrift store instead of endlessly streaming.
New(found) joy.
With a nostalgic bonus.

Op een donderdagochtend fiets ik naar één van mijn favoriete kringloopwinkels, spannend. Want eigenlijk zijn alle winkels prikkelparadijzen en kringloopwinkels zeker.

De combinatie van die klassieke kringloopgeur — vies én lekker — en een onvoorspelbaar assortiment; vaak van alles één exemplaar en geordend, maar toch door elkaar. Minder overzicht, meer indrukken. In deze specifieke kringloop is het ook nog eens altijd druk. De openingstijden zijn beperkt — logisch en slim, want ze werken met vrijwilligers — en er staat standaard muziek aan.

Een prikkelparadijs dus, maar ook het perfecte terrein voor dat heerlijke gevoel van de jacht. De jager-verzamelaar in mij ontwaakt tijdens het kringlopen en ik vind altijd wel iets. Ook wanneer ik eigenlijk niks zoek.

Het is niet de eerste keer dat ik een tripje kringloop uitprobeer;
de vorige keren waren leuk in het moment, maar met een nasleep. De laatste keer zelfs met hele pittige PEM. Ik ben voorzichtig dus, maar inmiddels ook weer ietsje verder in mijn herstel en deze keer dus enorm goed voorbereid. Gewapend met: oordopjes, een plan de campagne, een strak tijdschema en een boodschappenlijstje.

Met een boodschappenlijstje naar de kringloop?
Ja, echt. Want ik ben op een missie, mijn prooi van de dag: DVD’s.

Als een goed getraind paard, met oogkleppen op, negeer ik bewust de boeken, schilderijen, fotolijsten en keukenspullen. Ik sla twee keer linksaf, dan rechtsaf en wandel vastberaden op mijn doel af: het media gedeelte, precies in het midden van de winkel. Bakken vol LP’s en CD’s — ook negeren — staan naast kasten vol DVD’s. Geordend op genre; deze kringloop is niet voor niks één van mijn favorieten. Gretig ga ik op zoek.

Terwijl ik langs de kasten struin en met mijn ogen de titels probeer te scannen, word ik overvallen door een onverwacht gevoel. Ik ben bekend met kringloopgeluk: het ontdekken van schatten tussen de afgedankte en overcomplete inboedel van anderen. Maar dit is anders; het is pure nostalgie.

Want even waan ik me terug in de tijd: het is weekend, we hebben wat geld meegekregen van onze ouders en mogen een film huren in de videotheek in de buurt. Hoe maakten we die keuze toen? Geen idee, misschien dat we van te voren al bedachten waar we zin in hadden. Ik herinner me alleen nog het gevoel. Het binnenkomen in die zaak, de overvloed aan keuze. De lege hoes van de geselecteerde film afgeven aan de balie, daar stopten ze dan de videoband erin. En dan een gezellige avond met familie of vrienden op de bank, met chips en opblijven.

‘Weten jullie nog?’ vraag ik mijn broer en zus. En ze weten nog.
Want het videotheekgevoel is niet alleen van mij; het is een generatieherinnering. Een bijna verdwenen weekendritueel: dwalen, kiezen, wachten. In die vorm bestaat het nauwelijks meer — opgelost in streamen.

Ik vertel een vriendin — ook een kringloop jager-verzamelaar — over mijn videotheek-gevoel-ervaring. Ze herinnert me aan dat muziekje de intro van de intro tijdens de copyright waarschuwing, nog voor de film begon. Nog meer nostalgie.

Mijn wens, misschien een paar leuke DVD’s vinden, voor weinig, die wordt volledig vervuld. De nostalgische flashbacks krijg ik er gratis bij. Dankbaar fiets ik naar huis met een aantal DVD boxen in mijn mandje.

En ja, een DVD kijken voelt écht anders dan streamen: het openmaken van de DVD-hoes, het geluid van de speler die de DVD opeet, zoem, zoem, zoem…

En zo geniet ik een aantal weken van Poirot, Miss Marple en Pride and Prejudice, één aflevering per dag. Want wat ik kijk is wat ik ken, en ik geniet, maar met mate. Een serie achter elkaar bingen, dat bestaat al een hele tijd niet meer voor mij. Niet omdat ik bewust, uit principe wilde minderen met streamen. Ik ben in één keer uit noodzaak helemaal gestopt met media consumeren. Ik kon niet anders.

Eén van de dingen die vaak wordt gezegd tegen mensen die langdurig herstellen is: ‘Je wil uiteindelijk toch weer je oude leven terug…’
Maar is dat wel zo?

Ik ben een heleboel kwijt geraakt de afgelopen jaren, maar ik weet: er zat veel bij dat me nu niet meer dient. Haast bijvoorbeeld en twijfels. En een bepaalde vorm van vanzelfsprekendheid.

Ik mis óók veel. Dat voelt als rouw en verdriet, en soms nostalgie. Maar verlangen naar een vroegere versie van mezelf, dat helpt me niet. En (on)gezond of niet: we leven allemaal vooruit. We laten allemaal ieder moment een vorige versie achter.

Daarom probeer ik dat kwijtraken te zien als loslaten. Een spoedcursus in accepteren en geduld. In dingen bekijken vanuit een nieuw perspectief. En soms levert dat hele heldere inzichten op én vragen:

Wil ik wel zoveel online zijn, zoveel media consumeren, betalen voor zoveel abonnementen?

En dan ontstaat er ineens ruimte voor het terugwinnen van oude liefde. Voor een aangepaste versie van oud plezier, hier en nu. Zoals DVD’s scoren in de kringloop in plaats van eindeloos streamen.
